BBQ for a Cause – A Night at Blue Pit in Support of the John Wilckens PPE Fund

August 22, 2025

On August 14th, we fired up more than just the grill—we fired up our community! Friends, family, and supporters came together at Blue Pit BBQ in Hampden for a fun and flavorful night in support of the John Wilckens PPE Fund.

Blue Pit generously donated part of the evening’s earnings to help ensure that Baltimore City student-athletes continue receiving free, high-quality physicals each year. Thanks to their partnership, and the incredible turnout from our community, we’re one step closer to fully funding this important initiative.

We’re incredibly grateful to the team at Blue Pit BBQ for making this event possible—and for serving what we all agreed is the BEST mac and cheese in the world! Their support means so much, and it was inspiring to see so many people come out to honor Dr. Wilckens’ legacy and invest in the health and well-being of Baltimore’s youth.

Thank you to everyone who showed up, shared a meal, and made a difference.

Our Annual Sports Physicals Clinic Returns August 12 at JHOC!

August 14, 2025

On August 12th, we proudly carried forward a tradition that began under the leadership of Dr. John Wilckens: providing free, comprehensive pre-participation physicals for Baltimore City student-athletes. This year marked a bittersweet milestone—it was the first year without Dr. Wilckens at the helm. Yet his impact was felt in every detail, every volunteer, and every student who walked through the doors of the Johns Hopkins Outpatient Center.

Thanks to a dedicated team of physicians, residents, nurse practitioners, and medical staff from Orthopaedics, PM&R, Pediatrics, Medicine, and more, over 200 students received the exams they needed to compete safely and confidently this school year. Organized in partnership with Baltimore City Public Schools, this initiative removes barriers to sports participation for students who might otherwise go without this care.

While we deeply missed Dr. Wilckens’ presence, his legacy of service, equity, and commitment to youth athletics lives on. The John Wilckens PPE Fund made this event possible—and your support ensures that his vision continues year after year.

A Night to Remember, A Mission to Continue

July 28, 2025

Thanks to the incredible generosity of friends, family, and supporters of Dr. John Wilckens, over $62,000 has already been raised to support the John Wilckens, MD Preparticipation Physical Exam (PPE) Fund—sparked by a meaningful retirement celebration held at the United States Naval Academy.

The event was filled with heartfelt stories, laughter, and a deep sense of community. It was a true testament to the lasting impact Dr. Wilckens has had on his colleagues, patients, friends, and the countless student-athletes he’s championed throughout his career.

This celebration created powerful momentum that’s fueling a future where every Baltimore City student-athlete has access to the care they need to safely participate in sports. The funds raised will directly support free, high-quality physicals—removing a key barrier for underserved youth.

We’re excited to share that the first round of physicals for the year will take place on August 12 at JHOC.
