The Swim-a-thon was first conceived twenty-five years ago for one of our 4 year old Bay Ridge Marlins swimmers being treated for leukemia at Hopkins. 

Our swimmer, now 29, is in full remission, but our team and friends of our team are still swimming strong to help cure other kids. The swimmers have raised over $500,000.00 in the past twenty-two years! All monies raised go directly to pediatric cancer research at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center. 

This year, funds raised will support the work of Heather Symons, MD, MHS, associate professor of oncology and pediatrics and clinical director of the Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplant Program within the Division of Pediatric Oncology at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center. Her work focuses on clinical research to improve outcomes for pediatric bone marrow transplant (BMT) patients. After BMT, patients may experience late effects in long-term survivorship. In some patients, effects may be major and life-altering such as impaired or total fertility loss. This is concerning especially in children, adolescents and young adult patients who often have not, prior to BMT, considered their desire for future family planning. Methods to ameliorate this has been a growing topic in oncology, especially pediatric oncology. Support from the Bay Ridge Swim-a-Thon will support Dr. Heather Symons’ clinical trial efforts for a technique aimed at fertility preservation for patients receiving BMT.

We are happy to partner with Kids Helping Kids, swimmers taking a break from laps will be able to create a bracelet that will be gifted to a Johns Hopkins Pediatric Cancer Patient.
