On July 27th, 2020, at just 29 years old, Ida Peterson Hardon was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). Over the next four years, she courageously faced numerous rounds of chemotherapy, endured two stem cell transplants from different donors, and spent countless days in hospitals. Despite the challenges, Ida continued to live with determination and grace, finding love and marrying Mike Hardon along the way.
After her second transplant, Ida entered remission and enjoyed nearly two precious years free from the disease. During this time, she embraced life with renewed purpose. In October 2023, she became a top fundraiser for a Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) event, doubling her personal goal. In her own words, "I am trying to live my life to the fullest and spend my time loving, accepting, and giving back."
But just one month later, in November 2023, Ida’s cancer tragically relapsed, leading to cardiac arrest. Though she bravely fought on for six more months, Ida passed away on May 13, 2024, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew her.
Honoring Ida’s Legacy: Advancing a Cure for AML
Throughout her journey, finding a cure for AML became one of Ida's deepest wishes. To honor her memory and continue her fight, we have established an endowed fund at Johns Hopkins under the guidance of her oncologist, Dr. Mark Levis. Renowned for his pioneering work in AML, Dr. Levis is committed to developing groundbreaking molecular therapies to improve treatments and outcomes. He is also committed to helping patients who cannot afford to pay for developing treatments and drugs have access to them. While Dr. Levis was unable to find a cure for Ida, we are hopeful that his research will lead to lifesaving advances for others.
Our Goal:
We are striving to raise $200,000 this year to support Dr. Levis’ critical AML research.
Progress to Date:
Ida’s death does not have to be the end of her story. Her boundless enthusiasm, loyalty, humor, and the profound impact she had on so many lives will live on through this fund. By supporting this cause, you help us ensure that Ida’s fight continues—and that her dream of a cure for AML remains within reach.
We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who has already given so generously in Ida’s name. Your love and support have been an immense source of strength and inspiration for our family.
With heartfelt thanks,
The Hardon and Peterson Families
