$40 (or more!) for 40 Years of HIV Care

40 years ago, in 1984, Dr. John Bartlett opened the second HIV outpatient unit in the country at Johns Hopkins - only one year after the first clinic opened in San Francisco. One year later, in 1985, the inpatient AIDS unit opened - the third in the country.

In those 40 years, Johns Hopkins HIV services has taken a multidisciplinary approach to address the spectrum of patient needs, including specialists from infectious diseases, internal medicine, psychiatry, OB/GYN, dermatology, neurology, gastroenterology, nephrology, pediatrics, and more. The team includes physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, social workers, case managers, patient advocates, pharmacists, and many more who are at the forefront of both research into HIV and care for those living with HIV. Dr. B. Frank Polk first began studying the disease in 1982, and began working with what is now the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study (MACS), the longest-running HIV cohort study in the world, in 1983. In 2016, Johns Hopkins was the first hospital in the country to perform HIV-positive to HIV-positive kidney and liver transplants.

In this time, our incredible clinical team has cared for thousands of patients, particularly in our John G. Bartlett Specialty Practice (formerly the Moore Clinic). Located in East Baltimore, the clinic is 16,000 square feet with 24 examining rooms and provides a complete range of outpatient services including primary care, medical specialties, social work programs, substance use disorder treatment, adherence programs, mental health care, phlebotomy, pharmacy, on-site laboratory, gynecology, and several other specialty services. Our HIV outpatient programs also include the Johns Hopkins HIV Service County Program where HIV care is provided in public health clinics throughout Maryland and the Rockland Physician Practice at Greenspring Station. We provide HIV primary care to 3,500 patients, with over 30,000 total patient visits per year.

The funds raised through this campaign will go to direct patient care needs, including medication copays, durable medical equipment, and transportation to and from appointments, as well as to staff training and morale. These are not services covered by insurance, but all are critical to eliminating gaps in patient care and to supporting staff wellness. Funding for these services is needed now more than ever, as recent cuts in Ryan White funding have significantly impacted our budgets.

Not only are gifts to this campaign more important than ever, but an anonymous donor has pledged to match the first $10,000 given - doubling the impact of your support.

Please note that, while we have suggested some giving levels on this page, a gift of any size is deeply appreciated and will make a difference for our patients and for our team.

Thank you for considering a gift to this campaign.
