Together- Let's Support Our Neighborhood Hospital

Supporting the Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center

Howard County’s only emergency room is expanding its behavioral health unit to accommodate the increased demand for mental health care since the pandemic. “We’re seeing more patients than ever before,” says Andrew Angelino, M.D., director of psychiatry at Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center (JHHCMC). “The behavioral health unit is routinely over capacity, forcing patients seeking mental health care to wait in JHHCMC’s main emergency room for treatment. This expansion will free up space in the emergency room and is an opportunity for us to benefit all patients coming to our emergency department.”

To meet the growing need, construction is underway at JHHCMC to quadruple the capacity of its behavioral health unit from six to 24 beds. Slated to open in late 2024, the renovations will increase the size of the facility from 1,500 to 7,000 square feet.

To support the building of the Behavioral Health Unit, the Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center Foundation has launched a campaign called “Together: Let’s Support our Neighborhood Hospital” to raise $3 million.

 We can do it together.

What is “Together - Let’s Support our Neighborhood Hospital” ?

  • The Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center (JHHCMC) is launching an initiative, "Together, Let's support our Neighborhood Hospital" to raise the awareness in our community of the needs of JHHCMC.
  • Our mission is to engage communities, schools, businesses, and organizations to get the word out concerning the hospital’s needs while providing a mechanism to support the financial goals of the hospital.
  • Through community fundraising, our goal is to raise funds for the hospital in support of the Emergency Room.

Why are we doing this?

  • Maryland has the longest emergency department (ED) wait times in the United States.
  • Article about the wait times in the state of Maryland: Click Here
  • Average wait time in the Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center is 9 hours.
  • Through hospital expansion efforts, these JHHCMC wait times can be reduced.

Why would I care?

  • Everybody wants to live in a happy healthy vibrant community.
  • At some point in time, everybody may have a need to use the Emergency Department (ED).
  • The goal is to reduce wait times by optimizing the physical capacity of the emergency department and expanding the ED’s Behavioral Health Unit (BHU).
  • Ultimately, this issue is a community issue.
