Help us raise $75,000 to support Johns Hopkins Medicine and transverse myelitis (TM) research through Project RESTORE in honor of my Dad, Chris. As you heard in the video above, this cause is deeply meaningful to our family – not just for him, but for others like him, who are living with myelitis and myelopathies.
With more than 1,400 new patients diagnosed annually in the United States, myelitis and myelopathies do not discriminate: individuals of all ages, genders, races and family histories are affected. Transverse myelitis and other non-traumatic disorders of the spinal cord produce overwhelming functional disturbances, disability, and profound disruption of normal life; a wide magnitude of motor and sensory disturbances, interference with mobility, as well as pain and sensory symptoms are experienced by patients. Although considered “rare”, individuals living with these disorders often experience long-term consequences related to their quality of life. Subsequent to initial attack, only one-third of individuals will recover with little or minor symptoms, leaving two-thirds of patients with moderate disability or no hope of recovery from functional disability. Additionally, due to misdiagnosis and underdiagnosis, the prevalence of myelitis and myelopathies is likely under-reported, and it is our ultimate goal to ensure all patients receive the care that they need.
